Myraphor Scientific aims to explore the essence of recent discoveries in traditional and historical medicine in order to help with some of today’s pressing health problems.
Many of the subtleties of traditional and historical medicines are often misconstrued, relegating them to an inferior one-dimensional caricature of misguided superstition. At Myraphor Scientific, we reevaluate some of these traditons using insights gained from modern scientific research to provide answers to some of today’s health problems..
Why do we need new medicines?
Concerns over increasing toxicity and drug resistance has prompted scientists to search for new alternatives. Although these problems can be temporarily remedied by modification of existing compounds, this approach may lead us back to the same problems in the future. In contrast, the ‘combinatorial’ approaches of many traditional healing practices might ensure that we are not reliant on any single compound.
However, one stumbling block to deciphering the mode of action of many historic and traditional medicines is untangling their principal elements from the mythology and spiritual traditions that surround them. By careful consideration of cultural context and the application of modern analytical methods, we believe we can reveal insights into the core essence of these healing practices.
Origins
In 2016, researchers discovered Streptomyces sp. (myrophorea) from a traditional Irish folk cure (soil) which inhibited the growth of antibiotic- resistant pathogens such as MRSA and carbenipenem-resisitant Acinetonbacter baumanii. https://www.today.com/video/is-there-real-science-behind-traditional-irish-folk-cures-1459710531638 This group of microbes are already a well-known source of many modern pharmaceuticals including antibiotic, anticancer and antiviral compounds.
Current Research
Together with several international collaborators, Myraphor Scientific has expanded its research to try and uncover the principal components behind many traditional healing methods. Current research includes:
- Isolating Streptomyces from traditional medicines that inhibit multi-drug-resistant bacteria, fungi and viruses (including SARS-CoV-2)
- Isolation of bacteria that produce anti-cancer compounds
- Medicinal adjuvants derived from traditional and historic medicine
- Solutions to combat pathogenic amyloids (implicated in many diseases)
